Using AI to Build the 'Strava of Surfing'

Surfing is booming globally, with more people hitting the waves than ever before. But many surfers still struggle with inaccurate surf forecasts. Enter Wavey, an Irish-built platform designed to take on industry giants like Surfline. By combining community-driven data with AI technology, Wavey aims to provide smarter, more reliable surf forecasts, tailored to local conditions.

Born from Frustration

For years, surfers in Ireland and the UK have been frustrated by unreliable forecasts. Magic Seaweed was once the go-to app, but after being acquired by Surfline, it was shut down, leaving many surfers searching for alternatives.

"I started Wavey out of frustration," says Joey Irwin, the founder of Wavey. "After spending years in the corporate grind in London, I moved back to Ireland, where I joined an incredible WhatsApp group full of surfers from the West Coast, and every day people would share surf reports, photos, and spot recommendations. The one thing we could all agree on, though, was that the surf forecasts were almost always wrong. We needed something better."

Teaming up with Daniel Mezzina Samuels, a data scientist and fellow surfer, Joey created a platform that integrates spot-specific forecasts, live condition reports, and AI-powered predictions that improve over time with user feedback.

How Wavey Works

Wavey combines meteorological data and community-driven inputs to improve its forecasts. Users can log their sessions, upload photos, and share real-time conditions, which directly influence future predictions. This unique feedback loop makes forecasts more accurate with each contribution.

What sets Wavey apart is its personalized recommendations. The AI learns users' surfing preferences — such as when they like to surf, what conditions suit them best, and their skill level — to suggest the ideal times and spots to catch waves.

"Our AI doesn’t just give you forecasts; it learns about your surfing habits, your favorite spots, and the types of conditions you thrive in. It will recommend the best times and places for you to surf, so you never miss a session that’s perfect for you," says Daniel Mezzina Samuels, co-founder and lead data scientist.

"It’s all about collaboration. The more people log their sessions, the more the AI learns, and the smarter the forecasts get. We’ve created a system where the surfers themselves improve the predictions, making it a much more dynamic and community-driven process," adds Joey Irwin.

AI-Powered Learning: Every time a user reports conditions, the AI compares it with the forecast and adjusts future predictions accordingly. The more people participate, the more refined and accurate the system becomes.

Spot-Specific Forecasts: Traditional forecasting platforms treat all spots the same, but WaveSnitch understands that each surf spot is unique. By taking into account swell direction, tide preferences, and local wind conditions, Wavey tailors its forecasts specifically for each spot.

Pro Features: While Wavey is free to use, there’s also a Pro Tier offering features like long-range forecasts, webcam access, and AI-driven recommendations. Users can earn Pro credits by logging sessions, submitting condition reports, or referring friends. Joey explains:

"We’ve created a model that rewards participation. The more you share and engage with the community, the more benefits you get. That’s the beauty of it — the community drives the experience forward."

Join the Wavey Community

Wavey is 100% Irish-built, and its launch in Ireland is just the beginning. The platform will soon expand to the UK and Europe, bringing the power of community-driven forecasting to surfers around the world.

To celebrate the launch, Wavey has partnered with Black Sheep Surf Co. for a referral giveaway. The surfer with the most referrals over 72 hours will win a new surfboard — a fun way to get the community involved.
